About this event

What is DAYS international photojournalism festival 2009?

We have been delivering the reality of the world which major media does not report, on the role of "Eyes of the watch" as radical journalism.
There are still many wars, disputes, human-right violations, disruption of nature, etc., today that we must bring down to the world.
"Yokohama international photojournalism festival" of DAYS JAPAN, 5th in the series is held in Yokohama centering on photograph exhibition "Living on the earth" and the Hiraga Ryuichi photograph exhibition. Modeling the ペルピニヤン international photo festival at France, it aims “an event in which not only an ordinary event but an event that gathers every person who aims to become a photographer from Japan” with various events scheduled. We are looking forward to seeing you in "Yokohama international photojournalism festival", where photo journalists in front line deliver the “truth” through photos.

About DAYS JAPAN

DAYS JAPAN 翻訳文

What is DAYS JAPAN?

■We have launched this magazine because…
Since 9.11, a distrust of the conventional media has been spreading. On too many occasions, critical information failed to reach us. There were even times when the information broadcast by the media urged us to choose the path to war. As a result, our generation is rushing headlong in a dangerous direction. Although there are photojournalists who take excellent photographs, there aren’t enough media to publish them. We think it is important to protect our ability to read about the age we are in. That is why DAYS JAPAN was born, amidst this crisis of international mass media and journalism.

DAYS JAPAN is a journal that will,
■Publish the documentary photos that best support the campaign to protect human life and the natural environment
■Carry out investigative reporting
■Tackle topics such as discrimination, oppression, starvation and crimes by men against women
■Center on photojournalism
■Distribute world-class distinguished documentary photographs

We named this magazine “DAYS JAPAN” after the magazine that had been published once by Kodansha and had been stopped publication.
We, those who had been involved in the publication of that magazine, have decided to publish the new magazine to revive the former.

■the intention of publishing DAYS JAPAN
Now, we are in the situation that it is difficult for us to choose which information to trust, though there is plenty of information. At every war such as those in Afghanistan, Palestine, and Iraq, we all have felt that any information carries some bias and our distrust of the conventional media has been spreading. For instance, articles that conduct war often appear before wars. On the other hand, those that discourage war are hidden from the high places of editorial department and as a result may not been seen by the general public. Even letters from the viewers are carefully checked and often removed.

In the Afghanistan War and the Iraq War, there are responsible photojournalists who report the truth. As a matter of fact, however, we did not see their photographs in Japan because Japanese media are reluctant to carry them.

We keenly realized that despite there are photojournalists who take excellent photographs, there are not enough media to publish them.

Now, Japanese photojournalism is in a critical situation. Losing ambitious photojournalists means that it is hard for us to see if the world is taking the right course. That means we lose the eyes to read the times.

These days, although things such as transition of newspaper to the Internet and TV apart are pointed out, the truth often remain hidden. What should we report? What should we know? We aim to meet your view with DAYS JAPAN.
